Lately a friend asked me to help configuring Outlook in Windows for an account where the username is not an email address.
The new standard seems to be using the email address as username in mail server logins. Unfortunately for compatibility to older mail servers very often the username required is a simple name like ‘john’.
In Windows Outlook, since the new login standard seem to be using the full email address as username, the choice of entering the username is no more an option.
To remedy that here is the ‘work-around’.
1) Stop Outlook from running completely.
2) Press the following key combination to get Windows to present it’s ‘Run’ field: Windows-R
3) In this field enter the following command: outlook.exe /manageprofiles
4) Outlook will start in a very different mode where you can manage the email accounts including adding a new email account where you can enter the desired username.
5) When finished and the account configuration is saved. Exit Outlook and restart it normally.
The account will be displayed as a normal email account.
That’s it.
